I guess this would fall under the vanity category. It took me about 3 hours to set up my blog layout, because I had to find the perfect template. I tried out many different templates from btemplates before I found a winner. I wanted something "techie", creative and messy . . . yep, pretty much me.
I found starting a new blog a little more difficult and confusing that I originally thought it would be. I had trouble with the security settings and getting people to follow my blog. If I set the security the way I normally would with Facebook, then my friends would have a hard time following me without joining blogspot. I knew that wasn't going to happen, so I had to open up security to accept anyone. That new found knowledge was the reminder I needed about protecting my privacy through what I put on here versus locking down the account.
I also was having trouble with tweaking pre-made templates even though I know HTML, it's hard to decipher other people's code. Everyone has their own style. When I teach computers to my kids, I always tell them that there are usually about 5 ways to do the same exact thing on a computer, it just depends on your preference. I try to show them the most common ways to do things, but everyone adapts usability to a way that fits them.
I will definitely have to do some more personal blogging before I try to teach this to students or teachers. I'm always up for a challenge though!
